Yamaha Golf Cart Battery Problems

G-Series 36V and Drive/Drive2 48V battery testing and replacement. Individual cell testing, replacement scheduling, and lithium conversion options.

Fast Answer

Test each battery individually with the pack at full charge. G-series 36V: 6 batteries × 6V (should read 6.2–6.4V each). Drive 48V: 6 batteries × 8V (should read 8.3–8.5V each). Any battery more than 0.4V below the others under the same charge state is failing. If pack is over 5 years old and one battery is low, replace the full set.

One Low Battery

If pack is under 3 years old, replace only the bad cell. If over 5 years, replace all 6.

All Batteries Low

Pack at end of life. Replace complete set. All Trojan or all Interstate — don't mix brands.

Won't Hold Charge

Load test: drive 50 ft, immediately measure each battery. Good cells recover; bad ones stay depressed.

Yamaha Battery Configurations

G-Series electric (36V): 6 × 6V batteries in series. Common batteries: Trojan T-605, US Battery US2200.

Drive and Drive2 (48V): 6 × 8V batteries in series. Common batteries: Trojan T-875, Interstate GC8.

Never mix old and new batteries in the same pack. A new battery in series with degraded cells will be cycled outside its design range and typically fails within 6–12 months.

Lithium Conversion

Lithium battery kits for 48V golf carts have dropped significantly in price ($800–$2,500 depending on capacity). Benefits: half the weight, no watering required, 10+ year life, and the lithium BMS (Battery Management System) provides better protection than lead-acid chemistry. The charger must be compatible with lithium — most 48V lithium kits come with or require a lithium-specific charger. Not all existing lead-acid chargers can be used with lithium packs.
