E-Z-GO Battery Not Charging: Diagnosis Guide

Charger plugs in but pack voltage doesn't rise. Covers DeltaQ charger faults, battery recovery for deeply discharged packs, and when to replace the full battery set.

Fast Answer

Measure total pack voltage before and after a full charge attempt. If pack voltage doesn't rise by at least 2–3V after an hour on the charger, the issue is either a pack too low for the charger to engage (below ~34V on 48V systems) or a failed battery holding down the whole string. Test each battery individually to find the dead cell.

Charger Won't Turn On

Pack below activation threshold. See DeltaQ flash code 1 — manual trickle charge required.

Charger Runs, No Rise

One or more failed batteries absorbing charge without holding voltage. Test each cell.

Partial Charge Only

Pack reaches ~80% then charger shuts off. Bad cell failing under load. Load test each battery.

Diagnosis Procedure

Step 1: Individual Battery Voltage Test

With the pack fully charged (or after maximum charge attempt), test each battery's individual voltage. Healthy 6V: 6.2–6.4V. Healthy 8V: 8.3–8.5V. Any battery reading 0.5V or more below the others is failing and pulling the whole string down.

Step 2: Load Test

Resting voltage can be misleading — a weak battery may read normal voltage at rest but collapse under load. Drive the cart 50 feet and immediately re-measure each battery while voltage is still depressed from load. A good battery will recover within 10 seconds of rest; a bad one stays low.

Step 3: Battery Age and History

Lead-acid deep cycle batteries in golf carts typically last 4–6 years with proper maintenance. If your batteries are older than 5 years and you have one or more reading low, the practical answer is to replace the full set. Replacing a single battery in an old string puts a new battery in series with stressed cells — the new one typically fails within 12 months from the uneven charge cycling.
