Club Car Forward/Reverse Switch: Test and Replace

DS and Precedent F/R switch testing. When the solenoid won't click and OBC and battery voltage are ruled out, the F/R switch is next.

Fast Answer

Run/Tow switch in RUN? Good. Now test the F/R switch. Disconnect its harness. Set multimeter to continuity. Move switch to Forward — probe the forward circuit terminals. Continuity = switch is good, look elsewhere. Open circuit = switch failed, replace for $30–$75.

DS F/R Switch

Located under the seat on most DS models. Large black lever-style switch with 4–6 terminals.

Precedent F/R Switch

Dash-mounted rocker style. 2004–2011 Precedent uses a different connector than DS.

Test Procedure

  1. Confirm Run/Tow switch is in RUN. Under the seat. Failure to check this wastes time.
  2. Key off. Locate F/R switch and disconnect its wiring harness.
  3. Multimeter to continuity. On DS switches, the forward circuit typically connects terminals A and B; reverse connects C and D. Your specific wiring may vary — check OEM diagram for your year.
  4. Move switch to Forward. Test forward terminal pair. Should beep (continuity).
  5. Move switch to Reverse. Test reverse terminal pair. Should beep.
  6. No beep in either position = replace switch. One position only = that directional circuit failed.
